EC allegedly ignored Parliamentary Select Committee

BY: HAFIZAN TAIB
PETALING JAYA, SEP 20: The Election Commission (EC) is alleged to have ignored the Parliamentary Select Committee in their decision to delineate electoral boundaries in the country.
KEADILAN Strategy Director Sim Tze Tzin said the EC’s decision on this matter is seen as not complying with the rules established by the said committee in order to improve the election process.
He said the committee’s establishment in 2012 chaired by Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili was approved by the government and opposition parties.
“We view that EC’s action is in violation of the decision by the Parliamentary Select Committee which was set up in the Dewan Rakyat.
“The committee discussed and made several proposals but it seems that the EC not just failed to comply, but they also violated the regulations which to us are actions in contempt of Dewan Rakyat,” he said in a media conference, here, yesterday.
He said, at this moment, it is not just Pakatan Harapan opposing and protesting EC’s proposals, in fact Barisan Nasional’s component parties like MCA and Gerakan are expressing the same views.
“Therefore, we ask EC to withdraw the proposal and refer back to the committee’s recommendations,” he said.
