SHAH ALAM, 17 SEPT: The Election Commission (EC) is urged to explain why 13 Parliamentary seats in Peninsular Malaysia have 100,000 more voters in each constituency for the 14th General Election.
DAP Parliamentary Head Lim Kit Siang said that the previous delineation exercise in the Peninsula had violated the mandate given to the EC through the Constitution.
He said that Article 113 in the Constitution provided for corrections in electoral boundaries, not manipulation.
“In 2013, then EC Chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf quoted the 13th Schedule of the Constitution as a guarantee that there would not be any seat with more than 100,000 voters,” he said in a statement.
The Gelang Patah MP also revealed that six seats in Selangor, two in Johor and the rest in Malacca, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu with a high number of voters.
Lim said that the EC must be responsible and prove that it was not a ploy to ensure Umno retains power.
He also demanded an explanation regarding the issue from the EC.
“Firstly, reveal that at the end of 2013, former EC Chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman carried out a delineation exercise to ensure that Umno remained in power.
“Second, the initial delineation exercise was created to ensure that Umno has an advantage.
“Thirdly, the action was taken to defeat opposition leaders in seats that were easily compromised,” he said.
“Muhyiddin Yassin in Pagoh and Nurul Izzah Anwar in Lembah Pantai are among those targeted.
“The EC also wants to ensure that Umno / Barisan Nasional (BN) does not lose Johor in 2018, in addition to helping them regain Selangor,” he added.
