BY: ERMIZI MUHAMAD
PUTRAJAYA, OCT 12: The trial and judicial review of KEADILAN de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has come into international focus, ultimately leading to demands for fair and transparent legal proceedings.
Anwar’s lawyer, Kimberly Motley said that revelations of the case has attracted the attention of local and international institutions.
“The world is watching this case and it continues to receive international attention,” she said briefly to reporters outside the court.
Previously, many parties especially the United Nations (UN), of which Malaysia is also a member, has urged for Anwar’s release in relation to the Sodomy 2 Defamation case against the former Opposition Leader.
The UN in a statement has stated that the conviction against Anwar is politically motivated and has called for his immediate release.
At the same time, several top world leaders, amongst whom are Dr Yusuf Al Qardawi, also echoed the same sentiment in urging for Anwar’s immediate release.
The Federal Court on October 12, is hearing Anwar’s appeal for judicial review of his previous conviction and sentencing based on Rule 137 of the Federal Court Rules 1995.
This is seen as Anwar’s final appeal for release from the conviction after the Pardon Board which convened March 16, 2015, dismissed the petition for pardon and upheld the five-year prison sentence.
