Wan Azizah: Democrats jailed, kleptocrats roam free

SHAH ALAM, NOV 22: “More activists and opposition leaders will be detained after the Bersih 5 rally, on November 19,” said KEADILAN President, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
She said that in reference to a statement made by Home Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi who gave out a long list of names of individuals, consisting of activists, students and politicians; who will be detained by the police.
“The demonstrators assembled and marched peacefully although their safety was threatened by the Red Shirts and their journey was obstructed by the authorities.
“Once again, the leader fails to respect the rights for expression and peaceful assembly as stipulated in the constitution.
“This is the situation in our country now; democrats are jailed, kleptocrats remain in power,” she said in a statement.
Previously, police had detained several individuals including Bersih 2.0 Chairman Maria Chin Abdullah prior to the rally.
Besides Maria, KEADILAN Vice President Tian Chua and KEADILAN Women’s Chief Zuraida Kamaruddin, were also detained a day ahead of the rally.
Zuraida and Tian were released on bail on November 21. However, Maria is still in custody for a maximum of 28 days, and is being investigated under the Security Offenses Act (Special Measures) 2012 (SOSMA).
