Buying Proton Iriz with BR1M money is daydreaming

BY: NAZLI IBRAHIM
SHAH ALAM, JAN 11: The idea of buying a Proton Iriz car with money from Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) is daydreaming.
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Former Deputy Dr Rosli Yaakob said that, as BR1M receivers would usually prioritise spending the money on daily necessities such as food and school expenses for their children.
“It doesn’t make sense and is not practical as BR1M is usually spent on food and other necessities such as school expenses for the children.
“They usually buy rice, flour, sugar; pay school bus fees, expenses in school and other such expenses. Even if BR1M is increased, they will still buy basic necessities first and not an Iriz car to become an Uber driver. So this is merely daydreaming,” said Dr Rosli when contacted by SelangorKini.
He said those who wish to become Uber or Grab Car drivers can use their existing cars as long as it meets set conditions, like the car being in a good condition and such.
However, he did not rule out the possibility of a proposal being implemented through a different and more reasonable scheme, which would not put receivers in bigger debts beyond their repayment capabilities.
Prior to this, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) Secretary General Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah had said in a media conference in Putrajaya on Thursday, that BR1M receivers who do not own cars can use the money to get a Proton Iriz car and become an Uber or Grab Car driver to earn additional income.
