Plastic-free campaign should be expanded

BY: HAFIZAN TAIB
SHAH ALAM, JAN 13: The plastic bag and polystyrene-free campaign should be enhanced among communities, to create awareness on protecting the environment.
Local Authority Selection Committee Chairman (JP-PBT) Dr Idris Ahmad said more proactive effort should be put in to achieve the campaign objectives.
He said the campaign, which is effective on January 1, is seen as beneficial towards preserving the environment. However, promotions on the campaign is not yet effective.
“It is a good initiative but the emphasis should not be merely on policy, public awareness is more important.
“We find public involvement in this programme is still lacking and we need to instil this awareness for the sake of preserving the environment,” he said to SelangorKini.

He said from the briefings conducted on the matter, JP-PBT found that it has to be publicised more widely for the public to have a clearer and more accurate picture.
He said participation from entrepreneurs need to be increased to jointly reduce the usage of those materials.
“On the RM0.20 payment issue, collection from this payment is not given to the State Government but the purpose is more to educate the public on the importance of using alternatives to plastic.
“As such, we hope the public can be more conscientious by bringing alternative bags when going shopping,” he said.
