PUTRAJAYA, APR 12: Employers must grant leave to employees on April 24, in conjunction with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V’s coronation.
Human Resource Minister, Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said, the Federal Government has declared this April 24 as a public holiday, in conjunction with His Majesty’s coronation, according to the 1951 Holidays Act, Section 8, gazetted on April 3.
“Therefore, this holiday is constituted as a public holiday that must be accorded to employees as per 1955 Labour Act, Section 60D(1)(b),” he said in a statement as reported by BERNAMA.
Jaem said, based on that Act, employers are allowed to choose other working days in lieu of the public holiday.
“Employers are required to notify their employees on the day chosen as the holiday, be it April 24 or other days in lieu.
“If there are no leave in-lieu, employees working on that day are entitled to wages based on a public holiday rate,” he said.
Jaem said, in view that April 24 is a public holiday in Kedah, Negeri Sembilan and Perlis in conjunction with Israk and Mikraj day, employers must then comply with 1955 Labour Act, Section 60D(1)(b)(ii).
It says when a public holiday falls on another public holiday, the following day must be declared as a public holiday with full salary, he said.
“Therefore, April 25 is a public holiday for Kedah, Negeri Sembilan and Perlis,” he said.
