KAJANG, APR 6: The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) is realising the State Government’s wish to encourage recycling, reduction of plastic bags and polystyrenes in its municipality.
The initiative is done by organising the ‘Green Your Day’ seminar and Environment Awareness Campaign at Dewan Puri, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), today.
SIRIM Berhad, Hulu Langat District Health Department, FEP Management dan Consultant Company and  Kitchen Technology Sdn Bhd  also participated in the seminar to provide exposure to businessmen.
At the same time, SIRIM also introduced a new initiative which is the Green-Blue (GB) Packaging project, combining the concept of biodegradation and resource restoration to support environmental sustainability.
The Technical and Packaging Operation Department General Manager, Noor Hayati Mokhtat said, GB is used to replace polystyrene which is more dangerous and considered as environmental hazard as it can neither be disposed nor recycled.

“GB is made from paperboard which is safer when packing food and can support a maximum weight of 0.5 kilogramme.
“It can also protect the environment, save resources, reduce burden on landfills and has the eco-innovation criteria,” she said.
She said, the public and hawkers must be concern about the use of food packaging and the risks of using styrofoam and polystyrene.
“Both materials are silent-killers when hot food are placed in them.
“The United States Environmental Protection Agency has also listed polystyrene as the fifth most dangerous waste to the environment, threatening natural resources,” she said.
