Reviewing IPR and MES impacts, Selangor determined to eradicate poverty

SHAH ALAM, MAY 19: The Select Committee for Poverty Eradication has held a roundtable discussion with the Selangor Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) to eradicate poverty among citizens.
Its Chairman, Saari Sungib said, the discussion particularly reviewed the impact of the Inisatif Peduli Rakyat (IPR) and Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) programmes on 30% of Selangor citizens who are in the poor cluster.
He said the State Government had set RM1,500 a month as the poverty level for a household compared to RM741 set by the Federal Government.

“We are reviewing and monitoring the MES effectiveness to help reduce the 30 percent poverty rate in Selangor.
“We are recalling all relevant parties to discuss and review the effectiveness of their programmes so far in eradicating this issue,” he said.
Saari who is also Hulu Kelang Assemblyman said that to SelangorKini after the Private Hearing by the Select Committee on Eradicating Poverty at the Conference Room on First Floor, Annex Building, today.
Saari said the content from the meeting cannot be disclosed yet until it is tabled in the Selangor State Assembly session.
However, he said that the State Government continuously strives to ensure every plan is successful in reducing poverty level in Selangor.
So far, 38 initiatives have been implemented under the 17 IPR programmes and the government is always finding ways to ensure the state’s wealth is distributed more comprehensively.
Since 2008, the State Government has spent RM1.9 billion to fund various welfare projects for its citizens.
