Two week duration for state assembly is relevant

BY ERMIZI MUHAMAD
SHAH ALAM, MAY 13: The maximum duration of two weeks for the Selangor State Assembly is relevant, said State Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh.
She said the allocated duration will benefit the assembly and encourage them to debate motions during the sitting.
“We do allocate two weeks for each sitting because the State Government’s power is limited, unlike the Parliament where many ministers have various portfolios.
“Two weeks is more than enough for us to discuss any issue.
“Therefore there is no need for the duration of the sitting to be reduced,” she told SelangorKini.
The State Assembly takes place in the first quarter, middle of the year and the tabling of the State Budget, last October.
Media reports revealed that the Perak State Assembly had one of the shortest sitting durations, which lasts for only two days.
The Opposition Leader of that state, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaludin had previously said that the short duration hindered the assemblymen from debating fully on issues affecting the rakyat.
