Referring to the issues raised in the Halaman Kota, Berita Harian newspaper dated June 6, 2017 (Tuesday).
It should be noted that apart from the powers that fall within the field of Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), the Department of Environment (JAS) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), Local Authorities (PBT) can take action on nuisance in the river and so on in accordance with Section 69 and Section 70, of the Local Government Act.
On the issue of the badly polluted Sungai Batang Kali, indeed the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) has made it mandatory to restaurant operators to provide grease trap for all food premises in Hulu Selangor.
This is to ensure that food waste is not discharged directly into drains and drainage that would contaminate nearby water sources.
Enforcement action also will be taken against employers who fail to comply with the conditions set.
In the meantime, the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) will also take decisive action on the pond fish breeders that are likely to cause pollution to the river.
Concerted action with the agencies involved in keeping this resource like Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), the Department of Environment (JAS) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) will take place.
The Council welcomed the locals if any information about the cause of the contamination to contact the council at 03-60641331 or 03-60641050.
The complainant can also browse www.mdhs.gov.my to file complaints.
Indeed, public awareness is crucial to ensure environmental sustainability by keeping the river clean.
Clean rivers is a shared responsibility.
