I-Kad to be gazetted for foreign students’ identification

PUTRAJAYA, JUL 18: The Immigration Department is in the process to gazette the i-kad as a legitimate foreign student’s identification in higher-learning institutions which are registered with the Higher Education Ministry (KPT).
The Director-General of Immigration, Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said, by doing this, foreign students can use it for self-identification, in line with the 1959/63 Immigration Act and 1963 Immigration Regulations.
He said, this is to allow the use of i-kad for identification purposes in exchange of passport.
“The i-kad is to be used for self-identification for foreign students, however it is not a total replacement of passport,” he said in a statement, reported by BERNAMA.
Mustafar said, the Immigration Department is finalising the i-kad format to be included as a part of the Immigration Regulations (2017 Amendments) draft, through Immigration Affairs Unit in the Home Ministry.
He also added that the i-card’s new format will be equipped with a new version of biometric chip and permanent self-identification numbers to be recognised by all law enforcement agencies.
“This i-kad for foreign students will be introduced with a new format and enhanced security features to prevent forgery and abuse,” he said.
