Malaysia, Thailand pledge to enhance cooperation to fight drugs

CHIANG RAI, JUL 14: Malaysia has expressed its appreciation to Thailand for its quick action in capturing Malaysians who were suspected to be involved in drug syndicates, after both countries pledge to enhance their cooperation in combating drugs.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department Director, Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said, Malaysia had also foiled attempts to smuggle 55 tonnes of ketum and 22 grammes of cocaine into Thailand within the past several years.
“Drugs have become a global problem and to successfully combat it, we need to cooperate and exchange intelligence,” he said to the media after attending the 38th Malaysia-Thailand Narcotics Law Enforcement Cooperation Meeting yesterday, reported BERNAMA.
Thailand’s delegation to the meeting was headed by its Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) Chief Secretary, Sirinya Sitdichai.
Mokhtar said, Thailand had shown the efficiency, transparency and sincerity of its enforcement agency by capturing Malaysians suspected as drug dealers.

Meanwhile, he said, Malaysian authority will not allow the country to be the place to import, export or produce drugs.
Thailand authorities recorded two significant achievement last April when it captured two Malaysians suspected to be responsible in several attempts to smuggle hundreds of kilogrammes of drugs into Malaysia.
The two men, whom Malaysian media referred as “Mr T” or “Malaysian Iceman” from Johore, and “Mr G” from Penang, were caught at the Hatyai Airport and the Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok after close monitoring by Thailand authorities.
Meanwhile, Sirinya thanked Malaysian authorities for the efforts to foil attempts to smuggle the 55 tonnes of ketum leaves and 22 kg of cocaine into Thailand.
He said, Thailand seeks Malaysia’s help as we have the expertise in fighting and dealing with the problems relating to the use of ketum leaves.
He said, since both Malaysia and Thailand face the same problems relating to drugs, hence the two countries need to enhance its cooperation to ensure the fight against drug abuse is successful.
The meeting this year is intentionally held in Chiang Rai, located in northern Thailand and at the edge of the Golden Triangle, a location well known for drug productions.
