Parliament to Table GST Abolishment Motion Next Week

By Syauqi Jamil

KUALA LUUMPUR: The motion to abolish the infamous Goods and Services Tax (GST) are scheduled to be tabled next week at the Dewan Rakyat.

This is according to deFacto Law Minister Liew Vui Keong who said this adding that the Sales and Services Tax (SST) bill too are expected to be tabled next week.

He explained that the two matters needs to be resolved prior to implementing the SST in September.

Speaking to reporters at the parliament lobby, Liew also spoke on the efforts to abolish the Anti Fake News Act 2018.

He said he has already prepared the memorandum and will be submitting it to the Cabinet for approval.

“I think it’s in line with Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto that the recommendation for now is for the total abolishment of the act,” he said.

When asked to comment on the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), Liew said that abolishing the act would be easier in compared to the likes of Anti Fake News Act as it won’t involve costings.

However, Liew pointed out that the Home Ministry needs to come up with the memorandum as the matter is under their jurisdiction.

“Sosma is under the home ministry, so they have to take ownership. They have to come up with the memorandum,” he said.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had mentioned that the government would be abolishing Sosma, a controversial law passed in 2012 as a replacement for the Internal Security Act (ISA).
