By Syauqi Jamil

KUALA LUMPUR: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today called for an investigation into a government letter directed to US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) which was dated just days before the May 9 general elections took place.

The letter had seek help from the US to support then Prime Minister Najib Razak, should Barisan Nasional (BN) retain the government at the elections.

Lim said that the letter had raised plenty of concerns and questions as it involved the issue of Malaysia’s sovereignty.

“This is a very drastic action because it involves the sovereignty of the country. This invites foreign powers to intervene in the country’s affairs.”

“How did it came about? Who ordered it? Can an officer issue a letter like that? Was this an order from the top?”

“I hope there will a comprehensive investigation on this matter. At the same time, we ask if this letter was sent to other countries? Is there any more letters? This should be given attention too and investigated,” said the Bagan lawmaker to reporters in Parliament.

It was reported that the letter was supposedly addressed to CIA director Gina Haspel and was written on behalf of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organization (MEIO), signed by Hasanah Ab Hamid.

It urged the US to support Najib even if BN managed to win by a single seat in the last elections.

Najib: I cannot confirm nor deny

Meanwhile, Najib is seemingly distancing himself from the letter, claiming that he has no knowledge of the letter’s existence.

However, Najib claimed that the letter was agency to agency which are usually official government secrets.

“I cannot confirm nor deny the letter. I have no knowledge.”

“Such letters are normally not disclosed,” said the Pekan MP.
