By Syauqi Jamil

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sales Tax Bill 2018 and the Services Tax Bill 2018 (SST) had its first reading in the Parliament today.

The two bills were tabled by Deputy Finance Minister Amiruddin Hamzah, along with three other related bills.

This included the infamous Goods and Services Tax (GST) (Repeal) Bill 2018, which is expected to be abolished first to pave way for the reintroduction of SST on Sept 1.

The two other bills tabled are the Customs (Amendment) Bill 2018 and Free Zones (Amendment) Bill 2018.

Procedure wise, GST bill needs to be first abolished prior, based on Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) GE14 promise to abolish the GST taxation system and exhume SST.

The second reading the bills as well as the subsequent debates that followed are scheduled to take place early next week.

Previously, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that under SST, sales of goods will incur a 10% tax, while the provision of services will be taxed at 6%.
