KUALA LUMPUR: It is likely that Islamic party PAS may not contest their candidate at the upcoming Balakong by-elections.

Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this based on the majority gap during the last general elections in May.

“We won’t simply contest for the sake of it… We take into account previous result and the current situation.”

“PAS have yet to discuss this and this is my intial view. Because for the first time the majority between voters are too wide, we don’t want to waste people’s time unless there are any interest,” he said.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, when asked on PAS’ decision to sit out two consecutive by-elections, the Kubang Kerian MP briefly said that it is the party’s rights.

Earlier today, Election Commission (EC) have scheduled the Balakong by-election to take place on September 8, while its Nomination Day on August 18.

The Balakong seat in the Selangor Legislative Assembly fell vacant after its representative, DAP’s Eddie Ng Tien Chee perished in an accident on July 20.

His passing was the second tragedy that fell upon the Selangor State Legislative Assembly following the death of PKR’s Shuhaimi Shafie on July 2 because of lymphoma.

Shuhaimi’s death had triggered the three corner Sungai Kandis by-election which will take place on Aug 4.
