Khazanah: Mahathir, Azmin appointment in line with PH economic agenda

KUALA LUMPUR: The decision made to appoint Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali as Khazanah Nasional Berhad’s Board of Directors isn’t against Pakatan Harapan (PH) Manifesto.

Furthermore, Azmin said that its in line with PH’s intention to formulate the new national economic policy and economic agenda.

He added that this will be tabled at the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11) which is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament, October this year.

“We have to remember that this is the PM’s prerogative and by convention, its certain that the PM should hold Khazanah’s chairman post.”

“Khazanah’s goal is to the secure the national strategic assets. The role of national executive chief which is the PM is crucial as Khazanah chairman,” he told reporters in Parliament.

On Monday, the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement had announced the appointment of five of its new Board of Directors where Mahathir was named as its chairman while Azmin was named as one of its director.

Also appointed as directors are Mohd Hassan Marican, Sukhdave Singh and Goh Ching Yin.

Despite the appointment, Azmin who is also the Gombak lawmaker said that the sovereign wealth fund will still be managed professionals.

He added, Mahathir is currently going through several names which will be announced in the near future.

“The ministry’s role is to focus on economic agenda. The management of Khazanah will still be handled by the professionals.”

“The PM is going through a few names which will be announced soon, and a couple of other names for Khazanah’s finance and administration,” he said.
