KUALA LUMPUR: MCA today confirmed that the party will use its own logo for the upcoming Balakong by-elections rather than using that of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition’s.
Party president Liow Tiong Lai said that the decision made due to overwhelming support from the grassroots in using MCA’s own logo.
“We have received overwhelming support from the grassroots to use the MCA emblem for the by-election,” he told reporters at the MCA headquarters today.
However, Liow stressed that the party will not be leaving the fallen BN coalition as they were part of its founding members next to Umno and MIC.
He added, MCA and other components are currently strategizing plans to strengthen and restructure individual party from within.
Despite suffering heavy defeat at GE14 where most of its members including Liow had lost their seats, the former Bentong MP is confident that an eventual reform will take place.
“We have to readjust our own political role, and discard whatever historical baggage we have,” he said.
Liow also said that MCA have shortlisted their candidates and that party Vice President Chew Mei Fun has been elected as the by-election’s campaign chairman.
The Selangor vacant state seats of Balakong and Seri Setia will be having their by-election at the same time on Sept 8, and nomination day on Aug 18.
The Balakong seat fell vacant after Eddie Ng died in an accident, while the Seri Setia state seat triggered its by-election following the death of Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin due to colon cancer.
