‘Malaysia 1’ number plate breaks record, bid at RM1,111,111

PUTRAJAYA: Special car registration plate number “Malaysia 1” today broke the national record for being the highest bid for a single plate number.

The winning bid of RM1,111,111 was made by Aldi International Sdn Bhd as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

“For the Malaysia 1 number, the RM1.1 million can be considered to be the highest bid for a single car plate number ever collected,” he said.

The previous record holder for the highest amount bid was at RM989,000 for the “V 1” number plate.

Speaking in a press conference, Loke said the government have since collected over RM13.1 million for the Malaysia special plate series.

The bidding for special plate numbers “Malaysia 1” to “Malaysia 9999” was opened to the public from Aug 1 to Aug 15.

Out of all the numbers, only “Malaysia 2020” is unavailable as it has been reserved for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his official car.

Loke said Mahathir has agreed to use the number for the Prime Minister’s official car where the number would be making its debut at the coming National Day Parade on Aug 31.

To this day, there are still 6,645 numbers in the Malaysia series available for bidding. The public can make their bids online or by visiting their nearest Road Transport Department (JPJ) branches.

Based on the interest shown by Malaysians for special number plates, Loke said that the Pakatan Harapan government might just consider releasing special numbers every two months.
