KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor currently holds the top spot above other states in Malaysia when it comes to daily solid waste producer.

Based on the latest statistics from Solid Waste Corporation (SWCorp), Selangor generates 7,220 tonne of solid waste per day.

This monstrous figure is a whopping 22% from the total solid waste collection in Malaysia, which is currently at 33,000 tonne a day.

Coming up second was Johor who produced 13% (4,470 tonne a day) followed by Wilayah Persekutuan.

The state which produced the least amount of solid waste on a daily basis is Perlis with 2% (600 tonne a day).

The statistics was presented earlier during the Smart Waste Management breakout session of the National Mayor Roundtable in Selangor Smart City & Digital Economy Convention 2018.

The session had featured KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd Board of Director Syaiful Azmen Nordin, General Manager of Operations Mohd Idris Mohamed Yusof and Greenviro Solutions Sdn Bhd Business Development Manager Nurul Ain Abu Yazid as key discussers.

Speaking to The Selangor Journal after the session Idris suggested that more Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) be established in an attempt to reduce waste production.

Giving a rough breakdown of the MRF capabilities, Idris said that “80% of the total waste can be recycle, reuse and resell before sending the remaining waste to landfill sites”.

Nurul on the other hand suggested the implementation of integrated solid waste management where all waste management components can be combined to minimise the final amount going into landfill sites.

“We can have a recycling plant, sorting plant and other facilities all under one roof. This way we can reduce the amount by taking aside waste that should be burned, treated, recovered and so on.

“Each waste management technology is different and they consume different products… Each have their advantages so its good if we combine all of them under one roof in reducing solid waste,” she said.
