KOTA BHARU: A study is currently being conducted to evaluate whether East Coast Railway Line (ECRL) project should be resumed.

Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali said the feasibility study will be completed soon will reveal its findings on the feasibility of the mega project.

He said the Cabinet in Wednesday had discussed the project briefly where Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had requested for more time to verify the suitability of the project.

“In the ECRL project, we must see whether the project can create value and be beneficial to the people in the present highly-untenable economic situation,” he told reporters after meeting Kelantan state PKR leaders.

Azmin pointed out that the project’s past implementation under Barisan Nasional (BN) administration wasn’t a transparent one, where a huge quantum was paid out despite the project had not kick off.

He said roughly RM20 billion was paid out when there was little progress, adding that issues such as this was something that should be investigated.

The previous BN government had announced that the ECRL project linking Kelantan-Terengganu-Pahang with Port Klang would cost RM55 billion.

The 688km-long rail link project is aimed at reducing travel time and increasing the use of rail transport.

After Pakatan Harapan won in the May elections and took over the government, the fate of numerous project including ECRL have been in a state of limbo.

This is because the value of the contract is high due to the long and complex alignment of the track via tunnels and bridges.

The coalition have made it clear that they aimed to reduce the near RM1 trillion national debt.
