KUALA LUMPUR: There are no talks currently taking place in appointing foreigners as Khazanah Nasional Berhad’s Board member.

This was confirmed by Economic Affairs Minister and Khazanah board member Mohamed Azmin Ali

“We had the first board meeting about a month ago, no discussion to that effect,” he told reporters after his speech at the Khazanah Megatrends Forum 2018.

Despite this, Azmin did not deny the effectiveness of having seasoned professionals to help manage the sovereign state fund.

He said the matter could potentially be discussed again in the future.

“We may continue to discuss because we need to have a strong representation of the board that are familiar with the issue.

“We need a professional team to run and manage the board,” he said.

It was reported by local daily The Star who cited sources saying that Khazanah may appoint foreigner into its board, which includes those from United States, Japan and China.

In July, the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement had announced the appointment of five of its new Board of Directors, with Mahathir named as its chairman.

Also appointed as board of directors was Azmin; former Petronas president, Mohd Hassan Marican; former Bank Negara deputy governor, Sukhdave Singh and former Securities Commission executive director Goh Ching Yin.

In August, Khazanah had appointed Employees Provident Fund (EPF) CEO Shahril Ridza Ridzuan as managing director.
