SHAH ALAM – Registered Selangor Wifi Smart Users (WiFiSS) has now reached 1,143,855 within the three years since it was first introduced in September 2015.

The Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment EXCO, Hee Loy Sian said the State Government was satisfied with the performance of the WiFiSS service so far.

He said the assurance of service level within the 95 per cent range was also in the agreed range.

“However, the performance of the WiFiSS service is always on track and efforts to improve the speed and coverage of WiFiSS are always carried out with the suppliers,” he said in response to a question from Permatang State Assemblyman Rozana Zainal Abidin at the State Assembly, here.

At the same time, Loy Sian said there were 15 hotspots in Permatang state constituency involving the hall, the People’s Center, the village library, surau, mosque, clinic and others.

“However, efforts to extend the facility to Permatang are still subject to availability of suppliers’ core network infrastructure to target areas.

“In this case the supplier still has no core network infrastructure needed for broadband communications near the area,” he said.

Earlier, a total of 3,834 WiFiSS network services were established, around the state since its implementation.

WifiSS facilities are targeted at public areas and low income residents.

The development of telecommunications infrastructure via broadband (WiFi) access in Selangor will be expanded with 4,000 hotspots across the country, by the end of this year.

The implementation is a witness to the State Government’s initiative to ensure that all citizens get access through free high speed broadband access, thus closing the digital divide in Selangor in particular.
