KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has launched ‘Rakan MOTAC’ – a volunteer programme to find individuals who are keen to help promote the country’s tourism industry through social media sites.

Its Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said his ministry would identify about 40 individuals to act as ‘social media influencers’ where they would be asked to use hashtag # visitmalaysia2020 and #rakanmotac in every posting on social media sites to promote the country’s tourism industry.

“I am always open to giving space to any parties especially media partners in efforts to further boost the country’s tourism, arts and culture.

“I hope this initiative will enable the people to get a clear message about the direction of the industry,” he said during a get-together with the media and the launch of ‘Rakan MOTAC’, attended by about 200 media practitioners here tonight.

Among the criteria that would be evaluated for individuals to become ‘Rakan MOTAC’ volunteers was, he or she must have more than 10,000 friends on social media sites, he said.

He said they would be rewarded by the ministry when they execute at least three transactions on social media each month beginning Jan 1, 2019.

Programme like this, he said, would serve as a platform to give feedback, views for improvement of policies including tackling issues related to business matters of the ministry in a more informal way.

Meantime, Mohamaddin said Malaysia was on the right track to achieve its target of 26.1 million tourist arrivals for 2018 and was confident that the 30 million target by 2020 with RM100 billion receipts could be achieved.
