No More Plastic Straws in MPSJ’s Canteen

SUBANG JAYA – The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) is no longer providing plastic straws in the premises of their canteen.

Deputy President, Mohammad Zulkurnain Che Ali said the move was in line with the campaign to reduce the usage of straws by the Selangor Government by 2025.

“At the same time, MPSJ also reminded all owners of food premises not to use plastic straws as the state government had given a reminder on the matter before,” said Mohammad Zulkurnain.

“For your information, licenses issued by MPSJ also included an advise to owners of food premises to not use plastic and reduce the usage of plastic straws.

“For that purpose, we also distribute official letters to all premise owners so that they can no longer use the plastic straws,” he said in a press conference after MPSJ’s Full Meeting on 24 July.

Also present were MPSJ President, Noraini Roslan.

With immediate effect as of 1 July, all food premises in Selangor are forbidden to provide plastic straws to customers.

The Environment, Green Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation and Consumer Affairs EXCO, Hee Loy Sian, said the premises owners are also prohibited from providing plastic straws at counters to freely be taken by customers.

He said the policy was also in line with the ongoing Plastic-Free Campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastics such as plastic bags, polystyrene, plastic cover / coatings and disposable plastic materials.

It aims at educating and raising the level of public awareness on the long-term impact of the use of plastic, particularly the plastic straws, on health and the environment.
