EXCO Advises State Government to Build Lactation Rooms for Mothers

SHAH ALAM – EXCO of Health, Welfare, Women and Family Empowerment, Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud has urged that every state government building provide their own lactation rooms in support of the Breastfeeding Campaign.

Dr Siti Mariah said the Selangor government is proud that the State Secretariat Building (SUK) provides lactation room facilities in the SUK foyer as well as a mobile lactation room that could be carried anywhere.

“I also really hope that efforts to support breastfeeding will be a good start to cultivate healthy eating habits in a family,” she said.

“This is because of the fact that mothers who breastfeed their baby will only take healthy food for themselves and thus will provide healthy and balanced food for the whole family,” she added.

She said this when launching the Shah Alam City Council’s 3W (Health, Welfare and Women) Carnival at the Dataran Kemerdekaan on 4 August.

Also present were Shah Alam Mayor, Dato’ Haris Kasim and EXCO Entrepreneur Development, Rural Development, Village and Traditional Village, Rodziah Ismail.

The 3W Carnival which entered the eighth series was held in conjunction with the World Breastfeeding Week, which is celebrated from 1 to 7 August each year.

Siti Mariah said the celebration reflected the state government’s commitment in promoting, protecting and supporting any form of breastfeeding in Selangor.

She said that with such a commitment children can be protected from childhood illnesses and reduce the issue of nutritional problems in children, thus reducing the risk of disease in adulthood.

“Studies have found that among the reasons mothers do not breastfeed their babies is due to a lack of understanding of the importance of breastfeeding, being too busy with career commitments and lack of spousal support,” she said.

“The state government has always been supportive of any party that is working to raise awareness and support breastfeeding.”
