Unhealthy API for Johan Setia

Source: The Star

SHAH ALAM – The air quality in Johan Setia in Klang recorded an unhealthy air pollution index (API) reading of 106 at 10:30 am.

According to the Malaysian Air Pollution Index (APIMs) website, up to that time, 64 stations posted moderate readings of between 51 and 100, while three more stations posted good readings.

APIs between 0 and 50 are good, 51 to 100 are moderate, 101 to 200 are unhealthy, 201 to 300 are deemed very unhealthy and 300 or above are dangerous.

On 31 July, the Malaysian Meteorological Department announced that the country would face air or haze pollution, starting 1 August.

It is likely due to a forest fire in Sumatra, Indonesia.

The wind was also affected by low wind pressure factors from the South China Sea.

The API published by the Department of the Environment through the APIMs website will take into account the particle size (Particle Matter) of 2.5 micron and below (PM2.5), starting yesterday.

The use of PM2.5 in the calculation of the API is in line with most developed countries and will further enhance the government’s efforts towards preserving the environment.

The public can refer to http: /apims.doe.gov.my portal for current API readings.
