Exco: Consider the Need for Additional E-Waste Collection Centres

SHAH ALAM – The state government sees the need to increase electronic and electrical waste collection (e-waste) centres as an approach to curb the issue of disposal of such waste in Selangor.

Exco of Local Government, Public Transport and New Village Development, Ng Sze Han, said the 33 electronic waste collection centres available in Selangor were still inadequate.

“We identified 33 e-waste collection centres that housed electronic waste such as computers, mobile phones, printers, digital compact discs (DVDs), and household appliances,” said Ng.

“However, this amount is not enough and we need to add more so that people can dispose of their solid waste in the right place as it is the most hazardous waste,” he added.

He said this when met at the Opening Ceremony of the International Solid Waste Management Conference and Exhibition (ICEWM 2019), at the Shah Alam Convention Center, here on 25 September.

Also present were the Vice President of the Association for Environmental Management and Research (ENSEARCH) comprising ICEWM 2019 Organizer Datuk Ir Othman Abdul Rahim and ENSEARCH President Gobinathan Kumaran Nair.

Previously, the two-day conference started on 24 September and was organized by ENSEARCH in collaboration with the World Biogas Association (WBA) aimed at presenting Malaysia as a focal point for the practice of good and sustainable solid waste management.

At the same time, Ng said the conference was the best medium for raising public awareness on the importance of preserving the environment.

He said ICEWM also brought together industry players and policy makers on solid waste management in the country, including regional countries to come up with more ideas to ensure environmental sustainability.

“Solid waste at all 12 local authorities (PBT) in Selangor is about 7,000 tonnes daily due to a solid population of about 6.5 million.

“Therefore, it is a huge challenge not only for Selangor, but the whole country on how we can come up with the best way to manage solid waste,” he said.
