Selangor explores new technology to contain floods

By Norhayati Umor

KLANG, Nov 19 — The Selangor state government is looking into new technology to have underground reservoir constructed underneath fields or parking spaces to contain floods in the state.

Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim said a modern alternative should be used in building the underground reservoir in order for it to serve its purpose.

“The key component of drainage and flood reservoir should be included in developments.

“Rapid development is one of the causes of floods, which gives a large impact as it destructs public property.

“Due to the limited space, we have to look into new technology that would enable us to build underground reservoir underneath fields or parking areas,” he told Media Selangor when met at the Selangor Flood Reservoir Maintenance Programme at Bandar Puteri reservoir, here today.

However, Izham said the state government would look into the construction of vertical detention ponds as an alternative if an underground reservoir could not be built.

He said this is taking into account the topography of some of the land area, as it may be too limited or packed with existing infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) deputy director Saari Abdullah, who was also present at the launch, said a total of RM9.5 million was spent this year on the maintenance of reservoirs in Selangor.

He said several maintenance works were given the priority based on the degree of damages in some areas.

He said some of the works included removal of silt and sludge, maintenance of drains, cleaning of waste in reservoirs, and the maintenance and repair works of landscape structures.

To date, he said JPS has completed the maintenance works of 110 out of 553 reservoirs in total.
