PETALING JAYA, Nov 22 — Selangor is the most visited destination by Singaporean tourists compared to other nationals in 2018, said Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari.

The Selangor Culture, Tourism, Malay Customs and Heritage committee chairman said a total of 316,230 tourists to have visited the state were from the southern neighbour, out of the total 7.23 million visitors in 2018.

“This a great achievement that would boost the Selangor tourism industry as well as the state and national economy.

“We have also recorded a total of RM10.3 million tourism tax last year, which is an added revenue to the state government,” he said at the launch of Visit Malaysia 2020 (VMY2020) at the Selangor state level at Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur, here last night.

Also present were Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik and Motac Selangor director Syed Mohd Fariz Syed Mansor.

Abdul Rashid said the state government through Tourism Selangor is working on strategic planning to promote state tourism and increase the number of visitors in 2020.

He said several significant events have been arranged in conjunction with VMY2020 including Selangor Marathon, Selangor Cruise Festival, Selangor Golf Open, the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta yacht race and the Selangor International Indigenous Arts Festival.

“Aside from generating income for the Selangor people, these events would also help tourists to get to know Selangor better and Malaysia in general.

“Selangor has several interesting tourism products to offer and it should be developed to attract more tourists.

“The cooperation between the state and Federal government as well as the community as a whole is important in boosting the state tourism,” he said.

Abdul Rashid had also urged the Selangor people to help in promoting the VMY2020 logo and theme song, which was launched by the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in July.

He said the public can also help in the VMY2020 campaign through other efforts such as providing friendly services and maintaining the cleanliness of tourist spots.
