BANGI, Dec 23 — Almost 1.5 million people affected by the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant pollution are expected to get treated water supply latest by midnight.
Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said as of now, the process of increasing the water supply at the treatment plants are being carried out expeditiously.
“If the recovery process continues at this pace, then those affected would get their water supply sometime between 6pm and midnight. Having to manage the odour contamination had affected our efforts in supplying water immediately,” he told reporters when met at Kolam Tasik Idaman, here today.
Also present was Selangor Environment, Green Technology, Science, and Consumer Affairs Executive Councillor Hee Loy Sian.
Amirudin also pointed out that some 24 million litres of water would be channelled from Kolam Tasik Idaman Dengkil to Sungai Semenyih as part of state government’s effort to flush out the contamination from the river.
He added Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) had also initiated an alternative plan by redirecting water from Air Langat 2 to Terminal Bangi.
“This plan would bring relief and restore treated water to 50,000 consumers who are in need of water supply. People need to realise that restoring water supply and restoring electrical supply are two different types of process as the former takes up more time,” he said.
On December 21, the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant was forced to shut down completely due to the odour pollution, which was caused by irresponsible people disposing of illegal waste with solvent odours at the inlet around the Indah Water Konsortium’s plant.
Following the closure, 336,930 consumer accounts in Petaling Jaya, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang were affected.
