KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — Five Malaysian students made the country proud after finishing in second place at the WCAA Esports International University Competition (WCAA) in Dalian, China, recently.

Esports Distinct International Network Gamers (Esding) elite team, comprising five Sunway University students – Byron Young Meng Keen, Chua Jian Shen, Khoo Hao En, Hew Kent Yeung and Gabriel Leon Low – came close to victory but fell short to Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University of Russia in the Dota 2 final match of the competition, held from Jan 18 to 19.

For their feat, Esding received ¥80,000 (RM47,200) and the Russian team, ¥150,000 (RM88,500) as the winner.

Esding regional managing director, Afizal Amid in a statement today, said the selection for the Esding elite team was based on the performance of each student at its Elites Intervarsity Esports Championship (EEIEC) 2019 and also at the recent World University Cyber Games (WUCG) 2019.

A total of eight teams took part in the two-day competition, including from Malaysia, China, Russia, North America and India.

Esding, as the owner of the Esding Elites, a platform for grassroots esports players in the South-East Asian region, supports highly talented grassroots esports players by promoting international exposure and cultural exchange for regional talents under its wing.
