National crime index rate drops 7.5 pct

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — The crime index nationwide, which dropped 7.5 per cent last year, is among the successes of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in the effort to bring down the crime rate and turn Malaysia into a safe country.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said the Crime Investigation Department (JSJ) had succeeded in reducing the crime index rate by 249 cases last year compared to the target of 269 cases for every 100,000 of the population.

Also showing a performance to be proud of was the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) which had successfully solved 21,016 investigation papers of the 26,465 investigation papers handled by the department.

“A total 17,582 operations were carried out by JSJK and 15,876 people were detained for various commercial crime offences,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Based on the statistics, a case-solving rate of 79 per cent had been achieved by JSJK.

In an effort to transform the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) in order to remain relevant for eradicating and combating drugs, nine types of special operations were conducted, in addition to various plans including the Nurture For Betterment Programme.

Abdul Hamid said the police officers and personnel were also not spared if they were found to be involved in drug abuse, and 268 officers and personnel were arrested through Op Blue Devil last year.

“For Jan 1 to Jan 17 this year, nine PDRM personnel were arrested after their early urine tests were found to be positive … it is hoped that drug issues can be fully eradicated among PDRM personnel to uphold the dignity of this sacred institution,” he said.

The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) conducted 1,665 operations through Op Bersepadu last year compared with 961 operations the previous year, an increase of 73.3 per cent.

Abdul Hamid said JSPT had also been able to solve and charge in court road cases which were shared by the public on social media including hit-and-run, road bully, road rage, drunk driver and drug abuse cases.
