Selangor aims 45 gold medals in Sukma 2020

SHAH ALAM, Jan 29 — Selangor has set to bring home 45 gold, 40 silver, and 40 bronze medals in the Malaysia Games (Sukma), which will be held from July 11 to 19 in Johor.

Selangor State Sports Council (MSN) executive director Adi Faizal Ahmad Tarmizi said it is a realistic target despite the challenging competition in the 20th edition of the biennial event.

“We are optimistic that we would achieve the target despite the stiff competition, especially from the host state, Johor. We foresee that Terengganu would be one of our main competitors as well.

“The sporting events that we expect to win medals would be swimming, gymnastics, athletics, and lawn bowling,” he told SelangorKini.

Adi Faizal said that the Selangorian contingent had made its preparations for the games since 2018, focusing on the sporting events that are expected to win.

The state had registered 830 athletes for the event.

“We have entered the final phase of preparations, and the athletes will be evaluated to bring out the best among them.

“We are actively preparing the athletes by enrolling them into fitness programmes, tournament exposure, motivational camps, training, and overseas tournaments.

“The training and preparational programmes have placed the athletes on track for the contingent to compete and become the main competitors in the Sukma Games in Johor,” he said.

Selangor had bagged the highest number of medals in the 2016 Sukma games with a total 59 gold, 73 silver, and 64 bronze medals, defeating the host state of the year, Sarawak, and Terengganu.
