SHAH ALAM, Jan 8 — Selangor police recorded 7.16 per cent reduction in the crime index last year, which is equivalent to 1,528 cases, says Commissioner Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin.

The Selangor police chief said a total of 19,810 cases were recorded in 2019 compared to 21,338 cases the previous year.

“Out of the total cases, we have solved 12,232 cases or 61.75 per cent, surpassing the 45 per cent target.

“We also opened 33,977 Investigation Papers (IP), of which 18,574 have been prosecuted,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters, here yesterday.

The state Criminal Investigation Department is also coming down hard against organised crimes by targeting gangs, he added.

“We arrested 439 suspects for gang-related offences under the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) last year,” said Noor Azam.

Noor Azam said the state Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) recorded 2,162 cases involving more than RM71mil worth of losses in 2019.

He also stressed that the state police were prepared to go beyond any extent when it comes to protecting the residents from the criminals.

“With the given budget from the state government through the state Supply Bill 2020, we will add more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor criminal activities in hotspot areas.

As of October last year, a total of 775 CCTV units were installed state-wide. An additional 4,225 will be added this year.
