SHAH ALAM, Feb 5 — The cancer awareness campaign will be the curtain-raiser for the Selangor Welfare, Wellness and Women (3W) Carnival at Taman Sri Andalas in Klang on February 29.

Selangor Health, Welfare, Women Empowerment and Family Committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said the carnival would provide physical and mental health guidance on the disease.

The event would also offer free mammogram screening for women aged 40 and above, for the detection of breast cancer risk.

“The 3W Carnival is also a platform to promote the free health services provided by the state government,” she said in a Facebook post in conjunction with World Cancer Day 2020.

According to Siti Mariah, the World Health Organization reported in 2018 that cancer is the second-highest cause of death in the world affecting one out of every six individuals.

“Practice a healthy lifestyle, which includes healthy eating habits, regular exercise, do regular screening tests, and avoid alcoholic drinks and smoking habits,” she said in the post yesterday.

On Tuesday, Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said cancer cases which are detected at the late stages among Malaysians are at a worrying stage.

He said according to the National Cancer Registry Report, the number of detected late-stage cancer cases increased from 58.7 per cent from 2001 to 2011, to 63.7 per cent for 2012 to 2016.
