Interim PM serves as country’s administrator, says chief secretary

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 25 — The interim prime minister role, which is currently being shouldered by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, serves as the country’s administrator until a new prime minister and other administrative members are appointed, said Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Mohd Zuki Ali.

In this regard, he said Dr Mahathir would be carrying out all the affairs of the government in the implementation of existing policies and programmes as well as other official duties.

“This includes exercising powers given by law to ensure the day-to-day administration of the government continues,” Mohd Zuki said in explaining the interim prime minister’s role to Bernama here today.

As for the civil service, Mohd Zuki said it was operating as usual.

“This includes implementing the existing policies and programmes,” he said.

Today, Dr Mahathir began serving in his role as interim prime minister after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah consented to appoint him to the post after accepting his resignation as the 7th prime minister.

The 94-year-old statesman took oath as the 7th prime minister on May 10, 2018, after leading Pakatan Harapan to victory in the 14th General Election.

Mohd Zuki in a statement yesterday also said His Majesty had revoked the appointment of all ministers on the advice of the prime minister.

Accordingly, the duties of all members of the administration comprising deputy prime minister, ministers, deputy ministers and political secretaries ceased on the same date, he said.
