Selangor govt must be quick in addressing public issues

SHAH ALAM, Feb 28 — The Selangor government needs to offer swift, accurate and controlled communications since the community has adopted the pace of globalisation via social media, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Selangor Menteri Besar said the divided communities have their own spirit of togetherness that has made them cynical and sceptical towards those in power or the government.

“The ties between the people and government are multi-layered and multi-angled. Several issues, such as the 1Malaysia Development Berhad corruption case, has caught the people’s attention regardless of their background.

“The public concern towards current issues in the country has shifted in comparison to what it used to be, where back then it had only caught the interest of a small groups, such as enforcement officers and activists,” said Amiruddin in his address at the Selangor state assembly members’ retreat in Bandung, Indonesia, held from February 23 to 26.

Amirudin noted that the democratisation of media has also eradicated the concept of the ‘gatekeeper’ being a mediator between media and the people.

“Of course there are some exceptions, such as in the case of fake news, it can be widely spread, resulting huge impact. Fortunately, in the Covid-19 case, we were able to contain the situation, which could have caused panic,” he said.

Therefore, Amirudin stressed that the state government should provide quick and accurate response when it comes to addressing public issues.
