SHAH ALAM, Feb 4 — The special committee to oversee the open burning in Johan Setia, Klang has been given three months to resolve the issue.

Selangor Environment, Green Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the committee would call up landowners to identify suitable development for the 5,000-acre (2,000ha) of land, which contributes to the vegetable supply in the state.

“The committee will call up all landowners to find a solution. There are owners who live in other states such as Kelantan, Pahang and Penang as well and they are paying the annual taxes.

“We have also received several proposals for the state government to take over the land for modern agriculture or commercial development, which includes building houses,” he told reporters after attending the committee meeting at the Annex Building of the Selangor State Assembly, here today.

The meeting was also attended by Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin

It was chaired by Infrastructure and Public Facilities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim.

“Izham had proposed the installation of piezometer at the affected areas in Johan Setia to monitor the groundwater pressure or depth,” said Hee.

Piezometer is an instrument used to measure the pressure of a liquid or gas.

“Besides piezometer, tube wells would also be installed to pump water from underground water and small reservoirs.”
