Jais: Akad nikah ceremonies in Selangor suspended until March 31

PETALING JAYA, March 20 — Applications for Muslim marriages or akad nikah (solemnisation) in Selangor are suspended until the movement control order (MCO) ends on March 31.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) in a statement today, said this was following several of its marriage registrars or assistant marriage registrars are under quarantine after being in close contact with a Covid-19 positive case at a recent nuptial ceremony.

“However, akad nikah ceremonies that are to be held after the order ends are subject to the new regulations outlined by the religious state department,” the statement read.

The new regulations, which was effective from March 18 to April 17, was enforced to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Under the new rule, only a maximum of 10 people can be present at akad nikah ceremonies in Selangor and should only take 20 minutes from start to finish.

Shaking hands between the groom and the wali (guardian of the bride) or with the marriage registrar are temporarily disallowed.

Malaysia had enforced the MOC for two weeks from March 18 to 31 in a bid to flatten the curve of the Covid-19 pandemic.
