Sultan Selangor: Conservation plans increase river quality, ecosystem

SHAH ALAM, March 16 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has decreed on the need of a conservation plan that involves various parties in order to maintain the cleanliness of rivers and to protect the ecosystem.

The Selangor Ruler had in the previous year said 16 ‘Friends of River’ programmes were initiated to conserve the river basins and natural resources of Sungai Selangor, Sungai Langat and Sungai Klang.

“The development of the Selangor state River Conservation Blueprint (2020-2025) will be done in several stages, including environmental education.

“The education will be done in collaboration with the Educational Institutes and NGOs.

“Initiatives such as the Selangor state River Adoption Programme, Goes Green Concept, Selangor state Friends of River Convention and other programmes and campaigns could expedite the conservation development,” Sultan Sharafuddin said in his royal address at the opening of the first meeting of the third term of the 14th state legislative assembly sitting, here today.

He said some 21 ‘Friends Of River’ programmes is targetted for this year, which would be in collaboration with various parties involved in river conservation.

He said the weekly ‘gotong-royong’ concept was key to ensuring a harmonious community and the continuity of river conservation activities while it could also make the people appreciate and value the rivers.
