Close to 3,500 Covid-19 cases, almost half from tabligh gathering cluster

SHAH ALAM, April 4 — A total 150 new positive Covid-19 cases were recorded as of noon today, bringing the total tally to 3,483.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said almost half of the total cases involves the cluster originating from the Seri Petaling tabligh gathering, with 1,545 positive cases or 44.36 per cent.

“This is the biggest bluster that we have identified so far that has several generations of infection (clusters), including family members, close contact at the mosques and tahfiz school,” he told a press briefing on the Covid-19 update in Putrajaya today.

Dr Noor Hisham said the number of recoveries today is at 88, which brings the total of recovered and discharged patients to 915, or 26.7per cent out of the total number of cases.

“A total of 99 positive Covid-19 cases are still being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 50 of them require respiratory aid,” he said.

Four Covid-19 fatalities were reported, bringing the death toll in the country to 57, or 1.64 per cent out of the total number of cases.

The reported four deaths are as follow:

  • Case 2,149: An 85-year-old Malaysian woman, who had a history of heart problems. She had received treatment at the National Heart Insitute on March 23. She was pronounced dead on March 28 at 12.10 am.
  • Case 860: A 66-year-old Malaysian woman with a history of high blood pressure. She had received treatment at the Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital in Kelantan on March 18. She was pronounced dead on April 3 at 4 pm.
  • Case 2,850: An 56-year-old Malaysian man with a history of heart problems and had close contact with case 1,031. He had received treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital in Johor on March 30. He was pronounced dead on April 3 at 4.16 pm.
  • Case 1,575: A 61-year-old Malaysian man who was diabetic. He had received treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Afza Hospital on Kuantan, Pahang on March 23. He was pronounced dead on April 3 at 10.25 pm.
