Govt waives RM1 charge for domestic ATM bank transaction

By Ida Nadirah Ibrahim

SHAH ALAM, April 3 — The Federal government will waive the RM1 charge for inter-bank banking transactions at ATM machines beginning Monday (April 6).

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the move is to reduce the number of customers visiting banks to withdraw money over the counters.

“Through the Finance Ministry, the government has decided to waive the RM1 fee transaction at all ATM machines under the MEPS network, effective April 6 until the movement control order (MCO) ends.

“This is because a lot of people are still doing banking transactions over the counter because of the RM1 charge every time they want to withdraw money at the ATM machine.

“Therefore we are making it convenient for them so they do not need to carry out the transactions over the counter,” said Ismail at a televised press conference, after chairing the special task force meeting in Putrajaya, today.

Ismail, however, reminded the people to not flock the ATM machines and continue to practise social distancing when in public areas.

MEPS allows inter-bank banking transactions (including cash withdrawal) at any ATM machine of different banking institutions under the MEPS network.

Those using the MEPS network for interbank transactions are required to pay RM1 for each domestic bank transaction and RM4 for each foreign bank transaction.
