‘Makcik Kiah’ gets second-gen Covid-19 infection

By Ida Nadirah Ibrahim

SHAH ALAM, April 3 — Makcik Kiah has developed the Covid-19 infection from her daughter, Rosnah, who’s husband, Ayob, had just returned home from abroad for a work trip.

In an interactive video presentation, the Health Ministry (MOH) had shown how the coronavirus can easily be transmitted within a family in the community.

The fictional Makcik Kiah had initially gained instant fame after Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had used the character as an analogy to illustrate how the average Malaysian could benefit from the Federal government’s stimulus package on March 27.

The MOH is now using Makcik Kiah and her fictional family and friends to demonstrate how one can easily spread the disease to a fourth-generation by not adhering to the health officer’s advice to practise self-quarantine.

The Selangor Task Force for Covid-19 had shared the 3-minute awareness video on its official Twitter account today and had urged the public to be informed on the importance of quarantine.

“Watch the following video that shows the negative outcome when one does not follow the quarantine rule and how it could infect families and those we love.

“Perhaps a lot of people cannot picture the impact when people do not follow the rules set by MOH. Maybe many of the explanations are in written form,” said the task force on Twitter today.

In the video, MOH reminded the public that the coronavirus can easily be transmitted between individuals.

The elderly and those who have preexisting chronic illnesses are at high-risk in facing serious infection symptoms and complications.

MOH had reminded to follow the following practices to reduce the risk of infection:

  • Self-quarantine for 14-days after returning back from overseas;
  • Maintain a one-metre distance from others;
  • Practise proper coughing and sneezing etiquettes;
  • Wash the hands frequently with water and soap or hand sanitiser;
  • Disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched;
  • Wear the face mask if showing symptoms.

“Together, we can break the chain of Covid-19 transmission.”
