Monsoon transition brings heavy rain, thunderstorms

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 — The country is currently experiencing monsoon transition, said Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Jailan Simon.

He said the northeast monsoon has ended and is now changing to the southwest monsoon, which brought along slightly warmer weather, thunderstorms and heavy rain in the evening, especially in the west coast.

“However the temperature will not be too high and this weather condition is common, occurring in late March and early April.

“For example, the highest temperature recorded in Klang Valley these last few days was only around 34 degree Celsius,” he told Bernama.

He said the highest temperature ever recorded in the country was 40.1 degree Celsius in Chuping, Perlis on April 9, 1998 during the El Nino phenomenon.

As of yesterday, the highest temperature recorded this year was 37.7 degree Celsius in Sik, Kedah.

“The hot weather condition is common in the northern part of the Peninsular during this time of the year and it will subside in mid-April with more rain expected,” he explained.

Meanwhile, he advised the public particularly in the northern region to take advantage of the movement control order (MCO) by staying at home to avoid dehydration.

“Drink a lot of water and at the same time save water too. Nevertheless, we are predicting the rain to fall during this period,” he said, adding that people should avoid prolonged exposure to the heat and sun to prevent dehydration.
