More recoveries despite slight surge in new Covid-19 cases

SHAH ALAM, April 23 — Malaysia recorded a higher number in Covid-19 recoveries compared to new infections, despite the slight increase in daily cases.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said a total of 90 Covid-19 recoveries were registered as of noon today, bringing the total tally to 3,542, or a 63.2 recovery rate.

The number of new positive Covid-19 cases is 71, pushing the accumulated confirmed cases to 5,603. There are 1,966 total active cases.

“A total of 42 patients are still being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 21 of them require respiratory aid,” he said during the press conference on Covid-19 at the Health Ministry (MOH) in Putrajaya today.

Dr Noor Hisham said two fatalities were reported, bringing the death toll to 95, which translated to 1.7 per cent fatality rate.

The reported two deaths are as follow:

  • Case 3,871: A 32-year-old Malaysian woman who had a history of high blood pressure. She was a MOH staff and had close contact with a positive Covid-19 case (case 3,662) and was treated in Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Johor on April 6. She was declared dead today at 12.36am. This is the third death involving MOH staff.
  • Case 4,129: A 67-year-old Malaysian man who had a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and kidney disease. He had close contact with a positive Covid-19 case (case 1,575: linked to Persons Under Investigation Bali cluster). He was treated at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Pahang on April 8 and declared dead yesterday at 11.48pm.
