SHAH ALAM, April 17 — The suspension of new applications for Muslim marriages or akad nikah (solemnisation) in Selangor has been extended until May 31.
The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) said this is in line with the enforcement of the third phase of the movement order control (MCO), which will end on April 28.
However, the religious department said Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had decreed that applications that were already approved can proceed during the MCO period with valid reasons.
“This requires the approval of Jais director and without any other guests except those stipulated under Section 7 of Selangor’s Islamic Family Law Enactment.
“No new applications for the akad nikah will be approved during the MCO,” Jais said in a statement today.
Section 7 of the enactment states the persons who are allowed to solemnise the marriages.
Jais had on March 20 suspended the new application of solemnisation ceremonies to curb the spread of Covid-19.
