SHAH ALAM, April 23 — Selangor has recorded a total of 596 dengue cases and two deaths between April 12 and April 18, says Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.

The State Health, Welfare, Women Empowerment and Family Committee chairman said the tally recorded during the epidemic week 16 saw a 7 per cent increase compared to the previous week.

She said Selangor recorded a total of 22,776 dengue cases and 25 dengue-related deaths since the beginning of the year until April 18.

Last year, 24,255 dengue cases were recorded over the same period but with 19 deaths. This shows a decrease of 6.1 per cent in dengue cases.

“However, the number of deaths saw an increase of 31.6 per cent this year.

“Two dengue-related fatalities were recorded during the epidemic week 16 in Hulu Selangor and Klang,” she said in a statement here yesterday.

Dr Siti Mariah said the state health department will assess the effect of the movement control order (MCO) on the reduction of dengue cases and also prepare for a possible surge in cases after the order period is over.

She said areas with the highest recorded dengue outbreak are Petaling with 7,372 cases, Klang (4,582) and Hulu Langat (3,709).

“Sabak Bernam recorded the lowest outbreak with 69 cases,” she said.

Dr Siti Mariah had also advised the public, especially those in the dengue hotspots, to take precautionary measures and adhere to guidelines outlined by the Health Ministry to curb the Covid-19 outbreak.
