Celebrate Wesak Day in the new normal, says MB

SHAH ALAM, May 7 — As this year’s Wesak Day celebration is ushered in during a challenging situation, Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari says he hopes Malaysian Buddhists would take this opportunity to celebrate the festive season with their families in the new normal.

In his special address, the Selangor Menteri Besar said Wesak Day, which is celebrated to commemorate the enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha, would be celebrated for the first time without visits to the Buddhist temples across the country.

“I hope the people would take this opportunity to be with their family and taking care of their parents and children during these pressing times as we adapt to the new normal.

“I would like to extend a very Happy Wesak Day to everyone,” said Amirudin in a statement yesterday.

Amirudin said the Selangor government had introduced the modified conditional movement control order (MCMCO) after looking into the date and projections on Covid-19.

Among the additional measures imposed include a ban on dine-in in restaurants and recreational facilities and indoor sporting venues are to remain closed.

“The state government has implemented several additional measures on top of the guidelines set by the Federal Government in order to save lives and livelihoods,” he said.

At the moment, Amirudin stressed that the state government is in the midst of scrutinising several measures to be taken to help the micro-industry, small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) to ensure their sustainability in the economic sector after resolving the pandemic.

Previously, Amirudin had also unveiled the Selangor Prihatin Economic Stimulus Package, raising the total to RM400 million to address the Covid-19 impact.
